St Michael’s Church

St Michael’s is set in the heart of the village of Spreyton and we would be pleased to welcome you to join us in worship or to look around our beautiful church (which dates back to at least 1451 AD). More on the church, its history, architecture, monuments, graves and bell ringers.
We are a member of the family of churches called The Whiddon Mission Community which stretches from Chagford to North Tawton. It is an exciting time and we welcome people of all traditions and none to be part of what God is doing in this beautiful part of Devon.

Spreyton Primary School

Spreyton Primary School is a very small rural school in the heart of the village. Being small in number we enjoy the benefit of both knowing each of our children well and being able to adapt our curriculum to meet their individual needs and interests in exciting ways. Our staff team is enthusiastic and committed and we constantly strive to make the most of the strengths that our small numbers and learning environment can offer us.

Spreyton Primary School is situated in a building which was once a family home. We have high expectations of ourselves and our children, yet seek to achieve these whilst retaining a family ethos in our school. To this extent we foster and enjoy excellent working relationships with our parents and community. Although we make good use of our large, modern village hall and extensive playing field, the school building itself offers us the benefit of both a hall and a number of teaching spaces enabling both small and large group tuition in addition to class teaching.

Our Learning Environment

We prefer to consider our whole school as a learning environment which supports a rich and balanced experience. We consider our lunch and play times an opportunity for our children to choose to continue their learning through a variety of inspiring activities encouraging and developing skills of co-operation, perseverance, invention and problem solving. We consider physical exercise of the utmost importance.

Being situated in the heart of a farming community, local food and produce are important to us: children share responsibility for and take pride in our kitchen garden. We are very proud of our school kitchen, Spreyton offers hot meals cooked on site to all our children and staff. This year we aim to grow food which our much-loved cook can use in preparation of our school meals.

In June 2012 we formed the Mid Moors Federation with Copplestone Primary School. As a small school we have a nurturing, family ethos whilst benefiting from the wider possibilities of federation. We really are a small school offering big opportunities!

Spreyton Shop is owned and managed by the community in Spreyton. It is run mainly by volunteers with the assistance of a part time manager and the support of more than 200 local shareholders.

In July 2020 the shop celebrated 10 years of trading, with a Covid safe event including fizz and a fabulous cake. Thanks to everyone for supporting the shop, and here’s to the next 10 years!! (See image above)

The shop is next to the Village Hall and so is conveniently located next to the playing fields, tennis court, cricket pitch and children’s play area with superb parking. The shop has an outside seating area where you can enjoy outstanding views over Dartmoor.

The shop stocks a wide range of reasonably-priced everyday essentials, food, toiletries, cleaning materials, newspapers, tobacco and lots of Devon produce – including many items made very locally that you just can’t buy anywhere else.

You’ll find fresh bread, milk and cakes daily, vegetables, beef, chicken and eggs from local farmers and cheese from dairies in Devon and Cornwall, as well as locally produced jams and chutneys. There is also an excellent selection of wines and local ales.

And if you are visiting Spreyton you can buy a souvenir tea towel or bag and take home some foodie gift items.

The Post Office operates in the shop on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10am-12 noon.

The Fish Van will bring any items pre-ordered by phone as arranged.

The dry cleaning service is under review at this moment in time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For any orders you may wish to place please telephone 01647 231 711 as this will ensure that your order will be ready for your collection. Alternatively you can email the shop – info@spreytonvillageshop.co.uk.

Spreyton Village Shop is a community-owned shop manned primarily by volunteers and any surplus (profit) made by the shop will go back into the community. It is one of over 250 community-owned shops across the country, supported by the Plunkett Foundation whose aim is to “improve rural livelihoods through cooperative and social enterprise”.The shop now has over 200 shareholders and we are fortunate to have funding for. a part-time manager to run our everyday retail operations.

Volunteering in Your Shop

With the exception of our part-time Manager, the shop is run entirely by volunteers and we always welcome more. It’s a great place to meet people and build friendships. And without the volunteers there would be no shop!!

Some volunteers assist us greatly by opening the shop first thing in the morning: sorting the newspapers, early deliveries and start some of the opening checks, they have done their bit and still have a full day ahead of them. Others are involved behind the scenes with bookkeeping or marketing.

Some volunteers always work the same slot every week or fortnightly because that works for them, others fill in the rota when they see a gap to fit in with children, parents and part-time jobs.

However you wish to volunteer we will work to make it possible for you to be part of our community shop. We have a really good training programme and you will be paired with an experienced volunteer until you feel comfortable, with full training and support given.

If you are interested in becoming a shop volunteer please get in touch with Bela Snook, the manager or chat to a volunteer next time you are in the shop.

The Spreyton Flyer

Every four months ‘The Spreyton Flyer’ is produced and circulated around the village. This flyer contains all you need to know about Spreyton, what has happened since the last flyer and what is coming up over the next few of months.

The Spreyton Flyer has had a revamp and is now looking to include not just what has happened, and what will happen but welcomes articles from Spreytonians to share with the community. If you wish to place something in the next Spreyton Flyer please contact Sue or Sharon on spreytonflyer@gmail.com.

 Spreyton Village Map

We now have a village map which can be accessed to find any house or farm within the village and outlying areas. This will be of great help in case of an emergency and to many local couriers who struggle to locate houses and farms in Spreyton. Many thanks to the Spreyton Parish Council for all their hard work in putting this together.
